Health First-Internship

So this week I was still working on the cost staffing report. It is a long job that I have now worked on for the past 2 weeks and this to come as well. I had to go into each department again and add job titles that were on the report into the system. This way when the manager adds an employee they can select the right job title for that person. There were a number of positions that were in the system but not on the report. So this week I am in charge of researching why that is. I'm not sure exactly how to do that yet but I will be finding out on Wednesday. And if this goes anything like the other duties I have had to do for this report it will take me till Friday to complete it!

Health First Internship-Nov

Wow has time flew. I only have 9 more days of my intership and then its over. It is a bittersweet feeling I must admit. I am overly excited to be graduating and moving on with my career but yet I have grown so close to the company I have been interning for and do not want to leave. So whats a girl to do! Last week was pretty interesting. After searching through some 900+ pages so see which departments had all employees bugdeted or not. So after finishing that, I had to go into people soft and mark or unmark the associate so when the next report is printed it should show the right amount of budgeted employees. I really did enjoy doing that because it was unexpected and it kept me busy! This week to come, I honestly do not know what they will have me doing but Im sure it will be great!

Health First Internship

This week was pretty good! Lately I have been in charge of auditing different things for different departments. I also had to go under each employee and update their new manager (if needed) so when review time comes around the email gets sent to the right manager and not the old manager. i finally finished up doing last weeks audits as well. They were a bit time consuming, but needed. This week to come I have to go through 900+ pages and ensure that each department has all their employees budgeted. If they are not budgeted then we have a problem and will need to make changes!

Health First Internship

Last week and this week to come, I have been doing some audits for Health First. They have part time associates who are contracted in to work either Friday pm and Saturdays or Saturdays and Sundays. For working these shifts they are able to get full time benefits but by contract cannot miss more than 6 days in a year. So it really is the manager of that department who is supposed to keep track of who gets the benefits and who failed to qualify. I have came across many many associates who have missed up to 50 shifts when 6 is the max. These 6 shifts have to include vacations and sick days too. I then turn in my findings to Mis and Raelene and they will contact the directors of each department to find out why they haven't been keeping track. These associates will now lose their benefits because they did not stick to the contract!

Today I also was invited to sit in on a Labor Steering Committee meeting. Total there was around 18 attendants including myself. This committee is made up of directors, vice presidents, managers, etc... Departments present to the committee any positions they feel need to be replaced or any new positions that might be needed. They all look at the budget, listen to why they are needed, determine how critical the position is and they all vote to approve or disapprove. I learned a lot on how to look at the budget and ultimately how to be more patient satisfactory but while still saving the hospital money!

Health First Internship

I have to say that I absolutely love my internship. All the associates have been so wonderful to me, its unbelievable. I have already completed all the work assigned to me, which was supposed to keep me busy until the semester is over in December. However, Mia and Raelene are letting me do some of their work to get the ball rolling even faster. This week, they have given me each person in each department to go through and verify if their certifications are still valid. It seems to be very tedious, but I am learning so much. If a certification is invalid and if the associate is still getting paid for it, we must then email the director of the department and ask for the certification cards with expiration's dates to be sent over. If they can not verfiy that the certification is valid then we remove it from the system. This means the associate will not get paid for it untill they renew. So this is just one small way that we are able to help save the hospital money.

Health First-Internship

I'm at the half way mark! As of Friday October 9th, I have completed 120 hours with Health First. Had I only done a 3 credit internship (which requires 120 hrs) my time there would be over. So, I am thankful that I choose to do a 6 credit hour (240 hrs) so I can see the final results of all the hard work I have been doing. Last week and this week, I have been finding the information needed to complete salary surveys that will turned into and used Nationally. At first I was nervous because many companies use this information and I didn't want to make mistakes. But as I am learning the system and process, I am finding it too be quite interesting.

Health First Internship

This past week was basically a repeat of last week! This week however, I compiled all the information from the surveys and put it together on a excel spreadsheet. This information will be given to the head of each department that we will be meeting with, showing them how and why we recommend or not a pay increase. So far I have done this for about 10 departments and there are still a few more to do.

Internship-Health First

So this last week at Health First was a bit slower than the previous weeks. By slower I mean that my work wasn't as intense. They had me go over all the jobs that didnt have any information from the surveys and look up their job desciptions. There were quite a few positions so it has taken me a while. The job description has to compare almost exactly to Health Firsts so that we are comparing apples to apples and not apples to oranges. I haven't finished this task yet so that will be rolling over into this week to come.

Health First Internship-Sept16th-18th

So last week at Health First was pretty interesting! I was invited by my manger who is a Compensation and Benefits manager to attend 2 meetings that were being conducted with senior management. She felt that it would be a great experience as well as great insight to what goes on internally in a hospital. The first meeting lasted from 8:30am-2:30pm in which different Directors, managers, and even the Chaplain discussed ideas, guidelines, budget status, staff relocation, star performers, PL donations etc...However, I did not fully understand everything that was being discussed but that was a given. I did learn a lot and I am grateful that I was given that opportunity to be there. The second meeting was not as long but it went from 2:30pm-4:45pm. So we literally left the first meeting and headed straight over to the other office for the second meeting. This meeting was conducted by the CEO of Health Plans, CFO of Health First and Vice President of Human Resources. This meeting was to discuss ideas and implementations to their already standing benefits programs and insurance. This meeting was completely above my head but it was awesome.

This week to come, I will be compiling all the market data from the surveys that Health First participated in to see which positions need recommended for a pay increase!

Internship-Health First

So I started my internship with Health First on August 26Th, 2009. I go every Wednesday and Thursday from 9am-3/4pm and Fridays I go from 9am-12pm. I am working in the Human Resources department. My internship will consist of me doing salary administration and compensation analysis. I work with a great team of ladies who have all welcomed me in and made me feel extremely comfortable. So far, I have taken salary surveys that were done back in January and February and compiled the information to Health First. These surveys have to sit for at least 6 months before they can be used. I have completed all the survey data and reported it to Health First,so now they can take this information and use it to compare salaries in other regions. This week, I am looking forward to sitting in on a senior management board meeting which will discuss strategic planning for the company. I am sure it will be a very informative meeting in which I hope to learn a lot.
